Ballast water and emissions
NSI-005 Ballast Water Treatment Systems and related courses from the Nanak Shipping Institute, with a plain-language process stepper to see how the system works.
01 · Why it matters
Ballast taken on in one port can carry organisms to another.
A treatment system is fitted to deal with that risk.
Water leaving the ship must meet the standard.
Operations are written up for port state and audit.
The course itself is NSI-005 Ballast Water Treatment Systems at the Nanak Shipping Institute.

Stage 1
Ballast water is drawn in through the sea chest when the ship takes on ballast. This is where organisms from the port waters enter the system.
Stage 2
In many systems the water first passes a filter that removes larger particles and organisms before treatment.
Stage 3
The treatment step makes remaining organisms harmless. Systems differ: some use ultraviolet light, others use chemical or electrochemical methods.
Stage 4
Treated water is held in ballast tanks while the ship is under way, supporting trim and stability for the voyage.
Stage 5
When ballast is released at the next port, the water is treated again as needed so that it meets the discharge standard before leaving the ship.
Stage 6
Every operation is written up so that port state officers and auditors can follow what happened. Good records are as important as good equipment.

Port state officers and auditors read the paperwork first. These habits keep it clean.
Entries made at the time are the ones people trust.
Equipment trouble belongs in the record too.
Operations should follow the ballast plan on board.

NSI-005 Ballast Water Treatment Systems is a featured course at the Nanak Shipping Institute, listed in its safety and operations area. Details and enrolment questions are on the featured training page, and the institute replies through its contact page.
It treats ballast water taken on and discharged by a ship so that organisms are not carried between ports, in line with IMO ballast water rules. The stepper on this site explains the general flow. For the formal course, see the Nanak Shipping Institute catalogue.
No. The stepper is a plain-language explanation of the general ballast water treatment flow, not course material and not an operating manual. For actual training, enquire about NSI-005 through the Nanak Shipping Institute contact page.
Typically officers and engineers who operate, supervise or maintain the treatment system, and those who keep the related records. The institute confirms suitability by rank and experience, so share your crew list through the institute enquiry page and ask for guidance.
Beyond NSI-005, the catalogue includes NSI-009 Advanced Automation & Control Engineering and NSI-019 Leadership & Human Element, plus auditing and ISO programs. See the advanced courses page for details and ask which combination supports your fleet.
